| In
high school, and already famous - Clemson recruit's autographs
going for $40 to $60 on eBay ROEBUCK, S.C.
-- The interest in Willy Korn has grown beyond Clemson
fans, his gaudy statistical numbers and national rankings
as a quarterback.
That was evidenced Tuesday when autograph fan Len Brock
approached Korn at Shrine Bowl practice at Dorman High
and asked him to sign Byrnes High and Clemson mini football
helmets.
Korn even signed his Clemson helmet, "Willy Korn
#3" indicating Clemson has already given him a
number. He signed his Byrnes helmet with No. 11, and
he is wearing No. 12 in the Shrine Bowl.
Although Brock said the items were for his personal
collection, he mentioned that similar autographed Korn
items have been sold on eBay for $40 to $50. A brief
look on eBay Thursday found a signed Clemson hat was
selling for $39.95 and a signed helmet for $59.95.
"I have sold a few of his helmets the past few
months for $40-$50," said Clairemont resident Phil
Kurzyna, of paulsgraphs on eBay, when contacted via
email. "As you might already know with the Internet
and all the recruiting info that's out there today,
many, many high school athletes are more and more well
known today than ever before."
The reason all the interest in Korn? He is 6-foot-2,
200 pounds, can run a 4.62 40, is the No. 4 ranked quarterback
in the nation by scout.com and can run and throw the
ball. He is also playing in the U.S. Army All-American
Bowl on Dec. 6 in San Antonio , and he's graduating
early to take part in Clemson's spring drills.
Also, some think he would have been the missing ingredient
in Clemson's offense this season, which is the reason
they think he could come in and start immediately.
Korn said Clemson's coaches didn't mention starting
and he wasn't promised anything.
"It will be a four-man battle," Korn said.
"And I'm at the bottom of the totem poll."
His statistics did nothing to dissuade people's opinions.
He passed for 3,240 yards and 39 touchdowns this season
and 4,100 yards and 51 touchdowns his junior year, and
led Byrnes to three state titles.
"I think with his leadership skills and understanding
of the game, and the fact Clemson's offense is like
Byrnes' offense, with the combination of that and that
he's going early, he could start," said Miller
Safrit, scout.com's southeast recruiting analyst.
"He's really a cerebral quarterback. He's not
going to wow you with arm strength, but he is a guy
who will be a leader. He can make any throw under 20
yards. He can put the ball on the money in the pocket,
out of the pocket. He's really accurate. He can scramble
and give you five yards. He really opens a lot of the
playbook."
